  1. "North Korea v Japan - it's so much more than a football match" ---The Guardian, 02/09
  2. "NKoreans hope football game with Japan will not fuel diplomatic row" ---world_soccer_news.com, 02/03
  3. " Football clash for Asian rivals" ---BBC, 02/09
  4. "Asian clash fails to settle old scores" ---BBC, 02/09
  5. "It's more than just a game as Japan takes on neighbours in World Cup 'proxy war'" ---Times Online, 02/09
  6. "Asia's WCQ Grudge Match Looms" ---Goal.com, 02/09
  7. "Grudge match fans play it cool" ---The Guardian, 02/10
  8. "N Korea looks to exert muscle on football field" ---Financial Times, 02/08

Their (訳註:北朝鮮選手団の) isolation will end inside the stadium. About 5,000 fans in the sell-out crowd of 64,000 will be members of Japan's 150,000-strong North Korean community, many of whom are descended from people forcibly brought to work in Japan during Tokyo's bloody 1910-45 colonisation of the Korean peninsula.

Japanese opinion polls show wide support for imposing economic sanctions to punish North Korea for allegedly lying to prove that eight kidnap victims were dead.

In turn, Pyongyang's official media have unleashed fury on Japan, deriding Tokyo for its bloody occupation of the Korean peninsula which ended with World War II.

Japan is home to about 700,000 Koreans, mostly descendants of people who immigrated or were forced to come as laborers during the colonial era.

The community was given a choice after the Korean War to choose nationality with North Korea, South Korea or Japan. It is difficult to know how many chose North Korea as the communist state has no diplomatic relations with Japan.

Meanwhile official propaganda in North Korea continues to rail against Japan's past misdeeds during its often brutal colonisation of the Korean peninsula between 1910 and 1945.
JAPAN'S MISSING
Megumi Yokota
Snatched in the '70s and '80s
Used as cultural trainers for N Korean spies
Five allowed home in 2002
Five children now freed from N Korea
Eight said to be dead, others missing

Heartbreak over Japan's missing

Given Japan's bitter colonial legacy on the Korean peninsula, an ongoing crisis over North Korea's nuclear programme, and a dispute over the fate of Japanese citizens abducted by North Korea, their World Cup qualifier was always going to be about more than football.

With a rematch scheduled in Pyongyang this summer, the North Koreans still have a chance to defeat their former colonial masters. And Japan's North Koreans will get another chance to puzzle over their cultural identities.

Japanese politicians have pleaded with both sides to behave themselves. "Football is not politics," Junichiro Koizumi, the Prime Minister, has said. "I want the match to be enjoyed in a friendly atmosphere. I hope they will look for a good match as supporters who love soccer."

Few share such optimism. The match is overshadowed by politics and by the developing tension between Tokyo and Pyongyang. North Korea, the world's last Stalinist dictatorship, regards Japan as an odious colonist and a puppet of the American imperialist aggressor; the Japanese have always been perturbed by the presence of such a hostile and unpredictable neighbour so close to their western coast.

Bad blood between the two countries goes back to the beginning of the 20th Century, though some would put the date hundreds of years earlier. In 1910, the Japanese formally annexed Korea, and thirty-five years of brutal hardship for the local population ensued.

After the war finished, Korea became divided and was soon embroiled in a bitter civil war. If the two protagonists had stopped fighting long enough and looked east, they may have seen a country undergoing reconstruction, a process that was accelerated as it became the production line for goods to aid the south. At the end of the war in 1953, it was the two Koreas who were down and out while their former colonial masters were well on their way to economic recovery.

The Japanese have a grudge of their own as the kidnapping issue is still an emotive one at the other end of the Sea of Japan or the East Sea, depending on where you live.

About 3,500 police officers and security guards had been drafted in to keep the two sets of supporters apart amid fears that political tensions between the two countries over North Korea's cold-war abductions of Japanese citizens would spill over into the stands.

There were no reports of violence, and the presence of Japan's fanatical right wing was limited to a couple of elderly, bearded men chanting tired old slogans outside the stadium.

The impressive North Koreans outplayed Japan for much of the game but were unable to reward their colourful and noisy fans with a repeat of the glorious day in Middlesbrough in 1966 when they beat Italy to reach the World Cup quarter-finals.

The home supporters among the 63,000 crowd at Tokyo's Saitama stadium had booed the North Korean players and their fans before the game, but by the time the Stalinist state's national anthem was played at ear-splitting volume they were listening in respectful silence, even breaking into applause at the end.

Not only is the match being held amid increasingly hostile relations with Japan over the abduction of its citizens decades ago, but North Korea is seeking to regain its status as the top football team on the Korean peninsular(ママ).
"There's always a political dimension when any Korean team plays Japan. There's a lot of importance in winning against the old colonial masters," said Paik Hak-soon, head of the centre for North Korean studies at the South's Sejong Institute.
